Recepcja literacka na przestrzeni czasu spełniała różne funkcje; wśród nich fantastyka i cudowność odgrywały kluczową rolę w edukacji emocjonalnej, kontroli społecznej lub sposobie unikania (zabawa i humor). Od samego początku cudowne opowieści, które były wykorzystywane do wyjaśniania świata, w którym żyjemy, w tym ich zastosowania w edukacji młodych ludzi, aby odstraszyć nieznane (Bettelheim, 1976), ich moralne i religijne zastosowania, w tym żartobliwe, przechodzą przez proces nabywania umiejętności literackich, które są powszechnie przypisywane szkołom. Nie należy jednak zapominać, że rodzina i kościół działają jako elementy przyczyniające się do rozpowszechniania literatury wyobraźni.
