It details her relationship with her husband and children as well as her relationship with herself. It presents the problems they face as a family and includes whether they should move to Boston, the woman’s hometown, or stay in Maryland. Another issue they face is how to solve the financial problems of the husband’s dental practice. The woman feels she is turning a corner and entering a new phase in her life as she decides to resume her career, return to work, and enter Jungian analysis. Throughout the book, we see the woman attempting to find time for herself and her increasing urge to write.
