L’introduction précoce de substituts du lait maternel chez les nourrissons pourrait sans doute conduire à une réduction de la prévalence de l’allaitement maternel, ce qui se traduirait par un ralentissement de la croissance et, en fin de compte, par une augmentation de la morbidité et de la mortalité chez les nourrissons et les jeunes enfants. En effet, ils découragent les bonnes habitudes alimentaires chez les jeunes enfants. Les biberons et l’eau utilisés peuvent être une source d’infections. De nombreuses mères qui donnent des BMS ont également des difficultés à se procurer des produits appropriés et adéquats pour la période pendant laquelle le bébé aura besoin d’être nourri. Plusieurs facteurs sont associés à l’introduction précoce du BMS chez les nourrissons.
