Atualmente, as empresas estão a tentar criar algumas aplicações para sobreviverem à crescente concorrência global e às rápidas mudanças. Uma dessas aplicações é a externalização de funções externas à atividade principal. O objetivo desta investigação é identificar as razões da externalização nas empresas de turismo de saúde e as actividades que recorrem à externalização. As empresas de turismo de saúde são instituições médicas que prestam serviços médicos (hospitais, centros médicos, centros de saúde, etc.) e empresas que prestam serviços de saúde complementares (Termas, Spa & Wellness, Thalasso e lares de idosos). As empresas necessitam da externalização para reduzir os seus custos, a concorrência, a qualidade do serviço, a satisfação e reduzir vários riscos. Além disso, a externalização oferece vantagens como a flexibilidade nas operações de turismo de saúde, a concentração nas competências essenciais e a possibilidade de se tornar uma empresa de sucesso.
