Los residuos peligrosos que se generan en los laboratorios universitarios tienen características particulares que demandan ser tomadas en cuenta al determinar la forma más adecuada para su manejo, en el marco de la nueva legislación de los residuos de México y de los planes que al respecto deberán desarrollar las instituciones correspondientes. Esta circunstancia deberá ser aprovechada para llenar los vacíos de conocimiento que existen en la materia y orientar la educación y capacitación en este campo de manera más crítica y orientada a la solución de los problemas que conlleva la generación y el manejo de los residuos peligrosos. En el presente estudio sólo trataremos lo referente a los materiales peligrosos del tipo CRETIB, por ser estos los de mayor interés en la formación de los alumnos de las áreas de ciencias de la salud.
