Desde a década de 1960, quando muitos países africanos conquistaram a independência, evidências de vários países africanos anglófonos mostram experiências democráticas bem-sucedidas que têm um impacto positivo intrínseco nos seus resultados de desenvolvimento progressivo, em oposição aos seus homólogos francófonos. Esta situação suscitou controvérsias sobre quais poderiam ser as causas, os impactos e os caminhos a seguir para os países africanos francófonos e anglófonos. Foi elaborada uma hipótese a partir da premissa de que os países africanos anglófonos têm vindo a registar um grau de progresso comparativamente mais elevado nos processos de democratização do que os países africanos francófonos desde a década de 1990. As várias controvérsias em torno da história e da prática da democracia em África foram analisadas a partir de documentários publicados e não publicados. As análises teóricas baseadas nas práticas democráticas desempenharão um papel vital nesta análise. Com base no facto de que as questões discutidas neste estudo não são exaustivas até certo ponto, os pontos levantados ajudarão a contribuir para a controvérsia em torno da democracia africana e podem desencadear outras discussões interessantes sobre a democratização africana!
