Mudanças rápidas na visibilidade muitas vezes ameaçam a segurança da aviação e interrompem as operações aeroportuárias. E as mudanças na visibilidade causadas pelo nevoeiro são difíceis de prever. Então, os espectros das gotículas de nevoeiro e seus perfis foram observados para entender a evolução do nevoeiro. Sob camadas de nevoeiro mais finas que 130 m, gotículas de nevoeiro menores que 40 μm eram importantes, pois se esperava que fossem fortemente influenciadas pelo processo de condensação para a baixa visibilidade. E sob camadas de nevoeiro mais espessas, a visibilidade reduzida causada por gotículas maiores deveria ser afetada pelo processo de coalescência. A melhoria e a degradação temporárias da visibilidade foram fortemente afetadas pelo transporte descendente de parcelas de ar mais seco e pela sedimentação de gotículas de nevoeiro das camadas de nevoeiro mais densas superiores. Estes movimentos verticais e a sedimentação das gotículas desempenharam um papel importante na alteração rápida da visibilidade.
