The first volume of Evolutionary Biology was published twelve years ago. Since that time twelve volumes and one supplement have appeared. As stated in earlier prefaces, we are continuing the focus of this series on critical reviews, commentaries, original papers, and controversies in evolu tionary biology. It is our aim to publish papers primarily of greater length than normally published by society journals and quarterlies. We therefore invite colleagues to submit chapters that fall within the focus and standards of Evolutionary Biology. Manuscripts should be sent to anyone of the following: Max K. Hecht, Biology Department, Queens College of the City University of New York, Flushing, New York 11367; William C. Steere, New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, New York 10458; Bruce Wallace, Department of Genetics, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York 14850. The Editors vii Contents 1. • European Hair, Eye, and Skin Color
    Peter Frost
Europeans, especially those from northern and eastern Europe, are unique in having diverse hair and eye colors and a skin almost as pale as an albino’s. Those colors are not only brighter than the original black and brown but also 'purer'-they lie within thin slices of the visible spectrum. Overall, that color scheme is more developed in women, who naturally have a higher incid...

  • When Evolution Stops
    Armando Simon
Evolution is a fact. The evidence for it is simply overwhelming. However, the original mechanism that generates the evolutionary process, as first put forth simultaneously by Charles Darwin and Alfred R. Wallace and which became known as Natural Selection, has now been seen to be too simplistic by some scientists aside from the hard-core neo-Darwinists who insist that nothing w...

  • Essays in Evolution and Genetics in Honor of Theodosius Dobzhansky
    Max K. Hecht
It is not often that one has the opportunity to send a public birthday greet ing to a friend and colleague of many years, and to congratulate him on having reached the age of reason. In fact it happens only once, and comes then as a surprise. Surely it was only a few years ago that we sat together at an International Genetics Congress in Ithaca, and ...
