W Brazylii współzakażenia HIV/HTLV są stosunkowo wysokie i wiążą się z czynnikami ryzyka, takimi jak stosunki seksualne z wieloma partnerami i dożylne zażywanie narkotyków. Niniejsza książka zawiera wyniki mojej pracy magisterskiej, której celem była ocena, przy użyciu technik serologicznych i molekularnych, epidemiologii współzakażenia HTLV u pacjentów seropozytywnych HIV 1 ze stanów Pará i Amapá. Analiza filogenetyczna oparta na sekwencji nukleotydów regionu 5’LTR potwierdziła występowanie podtypu IIc. Próbki HTLV 1 pozytywne miały amplifikowany i sekwencjonowany fragment 800pb regionu 5’LTR, który wykazał profil RFLP charakterystyczny dla grupy Cosmopolitan, podtyp transkontynentalny. Uzyskane wyniki odzwierciedlają epidemiologię retrowirusów HIV 1 i HTLV w Belém i potwierdzają wcześniejsze wyniki, które wykazały wyższą częstość występowania HTLV 2 w stosunku do HTLV 1, co różni się od innych obszarów miejskich w Brazylii.
