A enxertia é um processo que envolve a escolha das espécies de porta-enxerto e de enxerto; a criação de uma união de enxerto por manipulação física; a cicatrização da união; e a aclimatação da planta enxertada. A enxertia de um rebento suscetível num porta-enxerto resistente pode proporcionar uma cultivar resistente sem a triagem e seleção prolongadas necessárias para criar resistência numa cultivar. Além disso, a enxertia permite uma resposta rápida a novas raças de patógenos e, a curto prazo, proporciona uma solução menos dispendiosa e mais flexível para controlar doenças transmitidas pelo solo do que a criação de novas cultivares resistentes. Além disso, a enxertia pode aumentar a tolerância a stress abióticos, aumentar o rendimento e resultar em um uso mais eficiente da água e dos nutrientes; prolongar os períodos de colheita e melhorar o rendimento e a qualidade dos frutos.
