O sistema de ensino aberto e à distância surgiu como uma alternativa importante ao ensino formal no mundo moderno. Devido à sua fácil acessibilidade, rentabilidade e flexibilidade, o sistema tem conseguido chegar a pessoas que vivem em zonas distantes e isoladas. Mizoram, um dos Estados do Nordeste da Índia, também registou um crescimento significativo do sistema de ensino aberto e à distância, tanto a nível do ensino superior como a nível escolar, desde o final dos anos oitenta. Verifica-se uma rápida expansão quantitativa dos centros de estudo, uma diversificação dos cursos e a inscrição de alunos. O presente estudo examinou vários aspectos da situação e do desenvolvimento do ensino aberto e à distância em Mizoram. O estudo demonstrou claramente que o ensino aberto e à distância desempenha um papel crucial no acesso a diversos programas educativos a um grande número de estudantes que vivem em locais isolados e que não podem pagar um ensino convencional regular devido à pobreza e ao envolvimento a tempo inteiro noutras actividades.
