A tomada em consideração das concepções dos alunos é cada vez mais importante no ensino das ciências da vida e da terra, devido à oportunidade que oferece de identificar possíveis obstáculos à aprendizagem. A ecologia é um dos temas mais importantes e difíceis de ensinar nas Ciências da Vida e da Terra, devido à confusão e ambiguidade dos seus conceitos e ao rigor metodológico necessário para os abordar. Entre estes conceitos, o ambiente natural, que é ensinado nas escolas secundárias, é uma noção polissémica, multidisciplinar, com interpretações científicas e sociais interferentes, sendo por isso objeto de equívocos entre os alunos.Este estudo utiliza um questionário para examinar a emergência e a análise das concepções dos alunos do currículo básico de ciências, opção francesa, relativamente ao conceito de ambiente natural.Os resultados desta investigação revelam a persistência de dificuldades na concetualização do conceito de ambiente natural entre estes alunos, em termos do seu significado, estrutura, dinâmica e equilíbrio.
