Il particolato atmosferico, noto anche come particolato (PM) o particelle, è costituito da sostanze solide o liquide microscopiche sospese nell’atmosfera terrestre. Il termine aerosol si riferisce comunemente alla miscela di particolato e aria, al contrario del particolato da solo. Le fonti di particolato possono essere artificiali o naturali. Esse hanno un impatto sul clima e sulle precipitazioni che influisce negativamente sulla salute umana. I sottotipi di particolato atmosferico includono il particolato sospeso (SPM), le particelle sospese respirabili (RSP; particelle con diametro pari o inferiore a 10 micrometri), le particelle fini (diametro pari o inferiore a 2,5 micrometri), le particelle ultrafini e la fuliggine.
