1. Die Bestimmung dieses Buches. Dieses Buch, das man als Handbuch bezeichnen kann, hat zweierlei Bestimmungen. Erstens soil es eine 'Momentanauskunft' vermitteln: Was ist der Tangens? Wie berechnet man einen Prozentsatz? Welche Formel gilt fiir die Wurzeln einer quadratischen Gleichung? u. a. m. Aile Definitionen, Regeln, Formeln und Theoreme werden an Beispielen erlautert. Woes notwendig ist, wird gezeigt, wie und in welchen Fallen man diese oder jene Regel anwendet, vor welchen FehIern man sich hiiten muB usw. Zweitens soil dae Buch als allgemeinverstandliches Hilfsmittel zur Wiederholung der elementaren Mathematik dienen und mit deren Anwendung in der Praxis vertraut machen. 2. Das Handbuch als Lehrbuch. Der Gedanke, daB man ein Handbuch auch Jasen kann, ist zunachst zweifelhaft. Nach den zahl­ reichen Leserbriefen zu echlieBen, verwendet die iiberwaltigende Mehrheit der Leser das Handbuch jedoch tatsachlich zu diesem Zweck. Ee kann sein, daB die Bezeichnung 'Handbuch' nicht vollstandig dem Charakter dieses Buchee entspricht. Andererseits ware die Be­ zeichnung 'Lehrbuch' noch weniger zutreffend. Eine derartige Be­ zeichnung wiirde die Vorstellung von einem Lehrbuch wachrufen, wie es in der Schule verwendet wird. Das vorliegende Handbuch unterscheidet sich jedoch in seiner Anlage sehr wesentlich von einem Schullehrbuch.
