En El individuo contra el estado, el filósofo británico Herbert Spencer defiende la libertad de cada persona contra la intervención cada vez más abusiva y absoluta del Estado, cuestionando además el concepto del poder político como defensor de unos intereses concretos que van en contra del individuo y de la sociedad en su conjunto. El autor es partidario de reducir el poder coercitivo del Estado sobre los ciudadanos siempre que sea posible y de ampliar continuamente el espacio en el que el individuo puede ejercer y regular libremente sus propias actividades, sin que haya un poder superior que las limite. Para muchos estudiosos Spencer fue uno de los filósofos más influyentes durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y su pensamiento puede considerarse como la esencia del liberalismo primitivo.
