El arte de la prudencia reúne en trescientos aforismos comentados las instrucciones, normas y explicaciones de la conducta humana, con el objetivo de proporcionar una cuidadosa guía sobre las consecuencias de los actos propios y los ajenos. La obra de Baltasar Gracián se inscribe en la corriente literaria del conceptismo, caracterizada por un estilo breve, concentrado y polisémico en el que se establecen asociaciones ingeniosas entre las palabras y las ideas que se transmiten. Como corresponde al periodo barroco, el pensamiento del autor es pesimista, dominado por la consideración del mundo como un entorno hostil en el que las apariencias y el engaño predominan sobre la virtud y la verdad. Se ha considerado a Gracián como un precursor del existencialismo y la postmodernidad y su influencia se encuentra en autores posteriores de la talla de Schopenhauer o Nietzsche. En esta edición hemos respetado la ortografía y los usos de la época del autor.
