Die vorliegende Einfiihrung ist aus den Vorlesungen und Ubungen hervorge­ gangen, die ich yom Wintersemester 1924/25 bis zum Sommersemester 1926 in GOttingen gehalten habe, um Physikern, Chemikern und Biologen die Mathematik nahezubringen. Niedergeschrieben habe ich sie in den Monaten Februar bis Juni 1927 wahrend eines durch den International Education Board ermoglichten einjahrigen Aufenthaltes in Danemark. lch folgte dabei einer freundlichen Aufforderung von Herrn Professor T. PETERFI in Berlin, welcher das von ihm bei JULIUS SPRINGER herausgegebene Sammelwerk 'Methodik der wissenschaftlichen Biologie' durch einen mathematischen Abschnitt zu eroffnen wiinschte. Zu meiner Freude waren Herr PETERFI und der Verlag damit einverstanden, daB der Beitrag auch in einer Sonderausgabe erscheint. Fiir meine Ziele und Wege mag im ganzen das Buch selbst sprechen. Nur einiges wenige will ich ausdriicklich hervorheben. Es kommt mir darauf an, dem Leser nicht Formelkram und lediglich handwerksmaBige Geschicklichkeit zu geben, sondern ihm den Sinn der mathematischen Methoden zu erschlieBen. Deshalb habe ich ganz besondere Sorgfalt darauf verwandt, die (meistens reichlich vernachlassigten) verbindenden Zwischeniiberlegungen zwischen der mathematischen Theorie und den naturwissenschaftlichen Anwendungen oder umgekehrt zwischen dem naturwissen­ schaftlichen Problem und der mathematischen Formulierung herauszuschiilen. DaB mir Anschaulichkeit am Herzen liegt, beweist die Anzahl17 4 der Ab bildungen.
