Beauveria bassiana ist ein entomopathogener Pilz, der bei einer Reihe von Insekten wie Weißen Fliegen, Blattläusen, Thripsen, Heuschrecken und bestimmten Käferarten die weiße Muskardinenkrankheit verursacht. Die Sporen von B. bassiana müssen lediglich mit einem Wirt in Kontakt kommen. Sobald das Wirtsinsekt infiziert ist, wächst der Pilz schnell im Inneren des Insekts, ernährt sich von den im Körper des Wirts vorhandenen Nährstoffen und produziert dabei Toxine. Wenn der Wirt stirbt, bedeckt B. bassiana den Kadaver mit einer Schicht aus weißem Schimmel, der weitere infektiöse Sporen produziert. Er kommt natürlich in den Böden zahlreicher Regionen der Welt vor. Ein großer Vorteil des Einsatzes von Beauveria bassiana ist die Tatsache, dass er bis zum Tag der Ernte verwendet werden kann, da die Rückstände für den Verbraucher nicht schädlich sind.
