Numa tentativa de fornecer uma abordagem empírica sobre por que os recursos didáticos continuam a ser inestimáveis no ensino e na aprendizagem, este trabalho investigou a eficácia dos materiais didáticos no ensino e na aprendizagem de economia em escolas secundárias públicas em Onitsha. Foram formuladas quatro questões de investigação e uma hipótese. Foram selecionados 100 inquiridos, compostos por 10 professores permanentes de economia e 90 alunos do 2.º ano do ensino secundário (turmas de ciências), através de uma técnica de amostragem aleatória simples. Um questionário e testes elaborados pelos professores foram utilizados para recolher dados relevantes. A percentagem simples foi utilizada para analisar as questões de investigação, enquanto o teste T foi utilizado para testar a hipótese nula. O estudo revelou que existe uma diferença positiva significativa entre o desempenho médio dos alunos ensinados com materiais didáticos e o desempenho médio dos alunos ensinados sem materiais didáticos. Recomendou-se que todos os intervenientes no sistema educativo envidem esforços incessantes no sentido de incentivar e manter a aquisição, produção, armazenamento e utilização de meios educativos no ensino e aprendizagem de economia nas nossas escolas secundárias.
