Cette étude cherche à savoir si la diffusion en différé sur le web de cours magistraux améliorerait la rétention des étudiants inscrits à un cours d’introduction à l’informatique sur une période de six semestres. La population de cette étude était composée d’étudiants en ingénierie de premier cycle inscrits au même cours dans une grande université de recherche d’un État de l’Ouest au cours de six semestres différents. Le même professeur a enseigné dans toutes les sections du cours, le même manuel et le même logiciel ont été utilisés, et le nombre d’assistants de laboratoire et d’enseignement était également exactement le même. Les devoirs et les examens ont été modifiés mais sont restés au même niveau de difficulté. Certains étudiants étaient inscrits dans les cours où la webdiffusion n’était pas utilisée comme outil, tandis que d’autres suivaient le même cours où la webdiffusion différée était utilisée.
