Il pisello caiano (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) è uno dei legumi più importanti delle zone tropicali e subtropicali dell’Asia e dell’Africa. L’India è il più grande produttore e consumatore mondiale di legumi, compreso il pisello caiano. Circa il 90% della superficie mondiale coltivata a pisello caiano (4,9 milioni di ettari) si trova in India, che contribuisce al 93% della produzione mondiale. La coltivazione del pisello caiano [Cajanus cajan (Linn.)] è gravemente colpita dal complesso dei parassiti del baccello e sta diventando un problema serio. Il complesso dei parassiti del baccello causa danni diretti ai baccelli e ai chicchi, con conseguente perdita non solo di resa in granella, ma anche di foraggio.
