La zone traditionnelle de Cherekpong, qui est une communauté minière du district, est marquée par d’innombrables problèmes environnementaux tels que l’érosion des sols, l’appauvrissement du sol et de la couverture végétale, la pollution sonore et atmosphérique, la perte de la diversité biologique, la dégradation des sols et l’insécurité alimentaire. Malgré ces problèmes, l’exploitation minière illégale dans la communauté est la principale source d’emploi pour les jeunes de la communauté, de génération de revenus et d’augmentation de la population, mais il ne semble pas y avoir de modèle systématique sur la façon d’aborder l’exploitation minière illégale, en particulier en ce qui concerne les effets négatifs.
