Les impacts des événements climatiques extrêmes sur les débits des rivières régularisées et leurs effets sur le milieu biophysique et la végétation herbacée est un thème relativement peu abordé, particulièrement dans le cas des régimes de type inversion comme la rivière Matawin. À cet effet, le rôle de la variabilité interannuelle des débits revêt une importance cruciale en raison de la forte variation interannuelle des débits qui caractérise ce type de régime hydrologique. La sécheresse hydrologique à l’été 2010 induite par le phénomène El Nino a été particulièrement prononcée. On a observé un nombre record de 160 jours consécutifs sans lâcher d’eau en aval du réservoir Matawin. À l’opposé, les années 2006-09 ont été particulièrement humides, avec de forts débits lâcher en aval du réservoir au cours de la saison végétative. Les forts débits des années précédentes et l’assèchement de la rivière à l’année de sécheresse hydrologique ont induit des changements significatifs de la végétation herbacée et des caractéristiques sédimentologiques des îlots.
