L’auteur analyse les documents produits par les instituteurs et les inspecteurs de l’enseignement primaire de la ville de São Sebastião, sur la côte nord de São Paulo, depuis 1840, date à laquelle les premières écoles ont été créées dans les quartiers les plus éloignés de la ville, jusqu’en 1889, date de la fin de la période impériale. Grâce à ces études, nous avons identifié le matériel pédagogique utilisé et la méthodologie employée par les enseignants pour développer l’apprentissage des enfants.
