Jedną z możliwych przyczyn starzenia się i niektórych chorób zwyrodnieniowych są wolne rodniki i inne utleniacze. Jednak przeciwutleniacze są w stanie stabilizować lub dezaktywować te wolne rodniki, zanim zaatakują one cele biologiczne w komórkach. Witamina E jest najbardziej aktywnym przeciwutleniaczem. Innym powszechnym problemem w północnej części Brazylii są choroby przenoszone przez ukąszenia owadów, takich jak Aedes aegypti, które wywołują dengę. Dlatego celem badania było sprawdzenie za pomocą testów biologicznych zarówno zdolności przeciwutleniającej, jak i działania larwobójczego surowych ekstraktów z Iryanthera juruensis (Warb) (Myristicaceae), uzyskanych w rozpuszczalnikach organicznych o rosnącej polarności. Metodą zastosowaną do badania aktywności przeciwutleniającej była metoda DPPH, obserwowana poprzez zmniejszenie odczytu gęstości optycznej analizowanych ekstraktów, w odniesieniu do kontroli w celu ustalenia procentowego odbarwienia rodnika DPPH, a aktywność larwobójcza CL50 została określona na podstawie procentowej śmiertelności w odniesieniu do kontroli negatywnej i pozytywnej obserwowanej po okresie inkubacji.
