Este libro está compuesto por dos conferencias que tienen en común las investigaciones del sociólogo Norbert Elias. En la primera, Malcolm Deas explora, con su lectura del libro Los alemanes, las posibilidades de comparación entre Alemania y Colombia con el fin de comprender la dificultad para definir un “carácter nacional” a través de algún valor superior aceptado por todos los colombianos. En el segundo texto, Jorge Giraldo se apoya en El proceso de la civilización, para usar este concepto como categoría alternativa a las de industrialización y modernización. Estas reflexiones exploran nuevos enfoques para entender la realidad colombiana y ofrecen a los lectores dos formas de proceder frente al uso de teorías sociológicas e históricas que buscan dilucidar las complejidades del comportamiento humano en sociedad. 10
