Dorothy’s Double: The Story Of A Great Deception is a novel written by George Alfred Henty in 1896. The book is set in the late 19th century and follows the story of Dorothy, a young woman who is forced to take on the identity of her deceased cousin in order to inherit her wealth. Dorothy’s cousin, who was also named Dorothy, was a wealthy heiress who lived in a grand estate in the English countryside. When she dies unexpectedly, her family discovers that she had secretly married a man who was considered unsuitable by her family. As a result, her family refuses to acknowledge the marriage and the man is left with nothing. However, the man devises a plan to get revenge on the family by convincing Dorothy to take on her cousin’s identity and inherit her fortune. Dorothy reluctantly agrees and begins to live as her cousin, but soon discovers that the deception is more complicated than she had anticipated. As she navigates her new life, Dorothy must contend with the challenges of living in a grand estate, managing a large staff, and dealing with the expectations of high society. She also finds herself drawn to her cousin’s former husband, who is still seeking justice for his mistreatment by her family. Throughout the book, Henty explores themes of identity, deception, and social class. He also provides a vivid portrayal of life in the late 19th century, including the customs and expectations of high society. Dorothy’s Double is a compelling story of intrigue and betrayal that will captivate readers of all ages. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
