Um dos choques ecológicos que tem vindo a aumentar nos últimos anos é o declínio dos primatas de grande porte. A preferência dos caçadores por caça com uma massa corporal mais significativa, que tem mais benefícios económicos do que os animais de pequeno porte, pode ser responsabilizada. A fragmentação das florestas provoca uma redução do tamanho do habitat, deixando numerosos primatas vulneráveis à extinção. Um ecossistema com menos primatas gigantes pode ter reduzido a dispersão de sementes grandes, a germinação e o recrutamento de plântulas de árvores maiores e, eventualmente, a regeneração de espécies de árvores com sementes grandes. A integridade de tais comunidades, ecossistemas e florestas como um todo pode ser devastada. Vários estudos estabeleceram que os primatas são um componente-chave das redes de dispersão das florestas tropicais. No entanto, nenhum estudo único sintetizou estudos sobre a dispersão de sementes por primatas, a germinação de sementes e a regeneração de árvores num todo coerente, expondo os componentes das várias interacções. As directrizes CEE para revisões sistemáticas permitiram a extração cuidadosa de metadados qualitativos e quantitativos de 126 publicações. A investigação revelou vinte anos de aumento da publicação de investigação sobre ’Dispersão de sementes por primatas’.
