Seit der grundlegenden Arbeit von LATIMER und RODE­ BUSH aus dem Jahre 1920 ist eine nicht mehr iiberschau­ bar grolle Zahl von Untersuchungen iiber die Natur und die Eigenschaften der Wasserstoffbrv. ckenbindung vor­ genommen worden. Besonders grolle Fortschritte wurden im Verlauf der beiden letzten Jahrzehnte erzielt. Hierbei wuchs in zunehmendem Malle die Erkenntnis, dall die Wasserstoffbriickenbindung in vielen Bereichen der un­ belebten und belebten Natur eine aullerordentlich wichtige Rolle spielt und daB ihre Erforschung ent­ scheidend zum Verstandnis vieler molekularer Strukturen und komplizierter Stoffsysteme beitragen kann. Es existieren mehrere altere und neuere Monographien, aber keine in deutscher Sprache. Das vorliegende betont monographisch abgefaBte Taschenbuch will dem inter­ essierten Leser ohne allzu grollen Zeitaufwand nicht nur ein Bild iiber das Wesen und die charakteristischen Eigen­ schaften der Wasserstoffbriicken vermitteln, sondern ihm auch die Methoden und Wege aufzeigen, die ein hohes Mall an Information gewahrleisten. Um diesem Anliegen mog­ lichst gerecht zu werden, mullte auf die phanomenolo­ gische Beschreibung von Wasserstoffbriicken-Systemen weitgehend verzichtet werden. Sie fand jedoch immer dort Beriicksichtigung, wo eS sinnvoll erschien, Allgemein­ giiltiges und Charakteristisches herauszustellen. Um dem Leser den Zugang zu speziellen und detaillierten Erkennt­ nissen zu erleichtern, sind in der Literaturzusammen­ stellung bekannte Monographien, informative Vbersichts­ berichte und eine Auswahl der wichtigsten Originalarbei­ ten aufgefiihrt. 4 Vorwort Bei der Anfertigung des Manuskriptes hat Herr Heinz Kaluscha, Leipzig, vielgestaltig und umsichtig mit­ gewirkt.
