Dieses Land stand zu diesem Zeitpunkt unter dem Schutz Großbritanniens, weil Belgien als eine Art „Puffer' fungieren sollte. Damit sollte verhindert werden, dass die deutschen Truppen einen Zugang zum Ärmelkanal bekommen und dadurch die Gefahr für die britischen Inseln weitaus größer geworden wäre und die Kontrolle der erstarkten deutschen Flotte weitaus schwieriger geworden wäre, als durch die Kontrolle und Blockade der deutschen Meereszugänge über die Nord- und Ostsee.Nach dem Einmarsch in Belgien erklärte Großbritannien am 4. August 1914 dem deutschen Reich den Krieg und begann sofort mit der Mobilmachung. Somit war also Großbritannien und der Rest des Britischen Empires in diesen I. Weltkrieg involviert.
