Hierbei werden die Ereignisse einerseits so behandelt, wie sie in der neuen Forschungsliteratur erscheinen. Andererseits werden Einhards Vita Karoli und die Reichsannalen zum Vergleich und zur Präzisierung als zeitgenössische Quellen herangezogen. Dabei sollen nicht nur die militärischen Ereignisse beleuchtet werden. Ebenso wichtig ist die weiterreichende (politische) Frage, welche Rolle die Kriegszüge der Jahre 782-785 im zweiunddreißigjährigen Gesamtringen der Franken mit den Sachsen gespielt haben.
