Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Geschichte Europas - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 1,7, Technische Universität Dresden (Geschichte), Veranstaltung: einführendes Proseminar mittelalterliche Geschichte, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Feldzüge Karls des Großen, welche er über 32 Jahre, von 772 nach Christus bis etwa 804 nach Christus, gegen die Sachsen führte, stellen einige der erbittertesten und blutigsten Kriege der Geschichte dar. Sie sind bis heute nicht lückenlos und zusammenhängend zu rekonstruieren, was aus der schlechten Quellenlage über die früh-mittelalterliche Zeit der Merowinger und Karolinger resultiert. Dadurch wurde mir bereits bei dem Einsehen möglicher Quellen klar, dass eine Darstellung und Analyse der vergangenen Ereignisse nicht ohne ein gewisses Maß an Spekulationen und Vermutungen zu vollziehen ist. Zu viele Widersprüche, Lücken und unterschiedliche Datierungen treten in den verschiedensten Quellen, welche sich auf diese Zeit der Sachsenkriege Karls des Großen beziehen, auf. Somit sind vor allem die Beweggründe Karls, die ihn in diesen für beide Seiten sehr grausamen Krieg trieben, in späteren Quellen vielseitig interpretiert und ideologisiert wurden. Sah Karl der Große es als seinen, von Gott gegebenen Auftrag, auch die heidnischen Sachsen zu missionieren und somit zum christlichen Glauben zu bekehren? Wollte der fränkische König das Land der sächsischen Stämme annektieren, da er es als Teil seines Reiches sah? Wollte Karl das Reich der Franken vor den Einfällen der Sachsen schützen, sowie damit seine Machtposition weiter festigen und ausbauen?
