Das Kloster, für welches sie geschrieben wurde, war das Kloster St.Jean in Arles (Südfrankreich) und ihm stand seine Schwester und erste uns heute bekannte Äbtissin Caesaria von Arles vor.Die Regula Virginium regelte sehr streng das gesamte Leben im Kloster der Frauen. Die Schilderung eines detaillierten Tagesablaufes und Vorgehensweisen bei Ungehorsam prägen den Charakter der Regula Virginium. Wichtige Regelungen wurden vor allem im Umgang mit außerklösterlichen Personen und dem Gehorsam gegenüber der Äbtissin und einer damit verbundenen, streng geregelten Hierarchie getroffen. Ersteres wurde hauptsächlich durch die Klausur bestimmt.Geschrieben wurde die Regula Virginium vom Bischof Caesarius von Arles, welcher seiner Schwester ein Nonnenkloster erbaute und sich um dieses bis an sein Lebensende intensiv kümmerte.In dieser Seminararbeit wird zuerst ein Einblick in die weibliche Monastizität des frühen Mittelalters gegeben (Punkt 2).Anschließend werden zwei tragende Personen vorgestellt: Caesarius von Arles (Punkt 3) und seine Schwester Caesaria von Arles (Punkt 4).Im sich anschließenden Hauptteil wird die Regula Virginium nähere betrachtet, unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Entstehung und zweier inhaltlicher Aspekte - der Bedeutung der Klausur zum einen und der Rolle der Äbtissin zur anderen.Abschließend soll die Bedeutung der Regula Virginium herausgestellt werden.
