Diese Studie darüber, wie Tutoren in einem von Schülern betriebenen Schreibzentrum an einem Gymnasium ihre Identität als Tutor wahrnehmen, zeigte, dass diese Arbeit die Teilnehmer auf tiefgreifende und transformative Weise stärkte, aber auch ihre Wahrnehmung ihrer Rollen als Schüler, Autoren und Tutoren verkomplizierte. Durch ihre Ausbildung zum Tutor lernten die Teilnehmer alternative Wege des Lernens und Lehrens kennen. Diese neue Perspektive durchbrach das, was sie zuvor als „normales' schulisches Schreiben und Schreibunterricht wahrgenommen hatten. In einer Rolle, die sie als missverstanden empfanden, berichteten die Tutoren, dass sie Schwierigkeiten hatten, anderen das kollaborative Tutoring näherzubringen. Darüber hinaus äußerten die Teilnehmer erhebliche Vorbehalte gegenüber der Einstellung der Klienten und Lehrer zum Schreiben sowie gegenüber dem ihrer Meinung nach übermäßig direktiven Schreibunterricht an ihrer Schule. Während also die Identität als Tutor die Schüler-Tutoren stärkte, schränkte das institutionelle Klima sie zugleich ein.
