Marie Freifrau Ebner von Eschenbach (1830-1916) war eine österreichische Schriftstellerin und gilt mit ihren psychologischen Erzählungen als eine der bedeutendsten deutschsprachigen Erzählerinnen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ihr ganzes Leben lang kämpfte sie gegen die etablierten Gedanken ihrer Zeit. Sie schrieb nicht etwa, um den Familienunterhalt zu finanzieren, sondern vielmehr mit der Inspiration und Überzeugung, ihre Schriften könnten die Gedanken ihrer Zeit verändern. Ihre Absicht war, Sittlichkeit und Humanismus zu vermitteln. Aus dem Buch: 'Bald darauf wurde Familienrat gehalten und beschlossen, zum Beginn des nächsten Schuljahrs nach Wien zu ziehen. Herrn von Kosel würde einige Zerstreuung gut tun, den Knaben das Studieren in öffentlichen Schulen leichter und lieber sein als das Studieren zu Hause. Und für Elika, die in letzter Zeit um ein paar Deka ab- statt zugenommen hatte, wäre es gut, einige Monate unter den Augen einer ärztlichen Celebrität zu verbringen.'
