Die Frage, die in dieser Studie behandelt wird, lautet: Sind Geschwister von Kindern mit Behinderungen sozial und emotional betroffen? Diese Studie wird anhand von Interviews mit vier Geschwistern von Kindern mit Behinderungen durchgeführt, insbesondere mit Autismus-Spektrum-Störungen und Down-Syndrom. Die Teilnehmer sind zwischen 16 und 20 Jahre alt, und jedes ihrer Geschwister befindet sich in einem anderen Bereich des Autismus-Spektrums. Die Bowen-Familiensystemtheorie besagt, dass alles, was einem bestimmten Familienmitglied widerfährt, Auswirkungen auf den Rest der Familie hat. Die Theorie besagt auch, dass eine Familie eine Einheit ist und dass alle Mitglieder miteinander interagierende Teile sind, die nicht voneinander getrennt werden können, da sie voneinander abhängig und miteinander verbunden sind (Bowen, 1966). Diese Studie baut auf der Familiensystemtheorie auf und konzentriert sich auf die Faktoren, die zu den sozialen und emotionalen Anpassungen beitragen, die Geschwister von Kindern mit Autismus-Spektrum-Störungen und Down-Syndrom beeinflussen können.
