Lorsque, il y a près de vingt ans, nous avons fondé le Monde de l’art, nous avions le désir ardent de libérer l’activité artistique russe de la tutelle de la littérature, d’inculquer à la société qui nous entoure l’amour de l’essence même de l’art, et c’est le but que nous poursuivions lorsque nous nous sommes lancés sur le terrain. Nous considérions comme des ennemis tous ceux “qui ne respectent pas l’art en tant que tel”, ceux qui soit attachent des ailes à un vieux canasson, soit attellent Pégase à la charrette des “idéaux sociaux”, soit rejettent carrément l’idée de Pégase. C’est pourquoi nous nous sommes adressés au monde artistique avec le slogan “Talents de toutes directions, unissez-vous !”. C’est ainsi que, dans nos rangs, Vrubel apparaît immédiatement aux côtés de Levitan, Bakst aux côtés de Serov et Somov aux côtés de Maliavin.
