Fruchtfliegen sind wahrscheinlich die größten Schädlinge im Obstanbau weltweit. Weit über den Guavenkäfer hinaus ist dieses Insekt für einen großen Teil der jährlichen Verluste verantwortlich. Mit dem Erwachen einer neuen Klasse von Verbrauchern, die sich um die Gesundheit der von ihnen verzehrten Produkte sorgen, ist es notwendig geworden, den Einsatz industriell hergestellter chemischer Pestizide zu reduzieren. Die biologische Schädlingsbekämpfung ist zu einem wichtigen Instrument im Rahmen integrierter Schädlings- und Krankheitsbekämpfungsprogramme geworden. Bei der Bekämpfung von Fruchtfliegen haben einheimische Parasitoide nicht die Effizienz gezeigt, die in brasilianischen Obstplantagen, insbesondere in Rio Grande do Sul, angemessen wäre. Eine Alternative ist die Einfuhr und Freisetzung der exotischen Art Diachasmimorpha longicaudata. Dieses Buch ist der Höhepunkt von 12 Jahren Studien über Fruchtfliegen. Es ist das Ergebnis einer Doktorarbeit, die Daten über die ersten Freisetzungen dieser Braconiden in Südbrasilien enthält.
