Le dimensioni e la conta piastrinica sono associate all’ischemia cardiaca e all’ictus ischemico, due delle forme più comuni di malattia cardiovascolare acuta. Mentre la conta piastrinica (PC) è un parametro clinico comunemente utilizzato, la valutazione delle dimensioni piastriniche mediante il volume piastrinico medio (MPV), ovvero la dimensione media delle piastrine in un campione di sangue, e l’ampiezza di distribuzione piastrinica (PDW), ovvero la varianza della curva del volume piastrinico, è meno frequente. L’obiettivo generale della mia ricerca è caratterizzare queste tre misure quantitative delle piastrine in una popolazione di individui sani e valutare i determinanti genetici e ambientali di questi tratti. Sono stati esaminati predittori clinici e antropometrici, oltre a uno studio di associazione genomica (GWAS) condotto per ciascuno di questi tre tratti piastrinici quantitativi. Sono stati individuati 23 SNP associati a un livello di significatività indicativo (p < 1×10⁻⁵) e alcuni loci associati erano vicini a geni candidati plausibili. MPV, PC e PDW sono tratti ereditari e una migliore comprensione delle loro basi genetiche e ambientali potrebbe fornire nuove informazioni sulla biologia delle piastrine.
