Todos os professores se esforçam para despertar a motivação nos seus alunos. Esta pesquisa explora estudos que se concentram no que motiva as pessoas a aprender e a ter um bom desempenho. O estudo analisa motivadores extrínsecos e intrínsecos em vários contextos. Ao encontrar motivadores comuns, os professores podem ser capazes de explorar o que motiva intrinsecamente os alunos para melhor atendê-los na sala de aula. É discutido o uso de recompensas extrínsecas para motivar os alunos. Os primeiros trabalhos de especialistas na área da investigação sobre motivação, Deci, Ryan, Wigfield, Eccles e Kohn, são analisados para fornecer alguns antecedentes históricos sobre a investigação sobre motivação, juntamente com estudos atuais relacionados com o tema. Esta investigação também analisa a motivação, uma vez que esta é afetada pela família, pelas relações com os colegas e professores e pelo grau de apoio do ambiente da sala de aula.
