Embryonic desiodase creates an archetype of an endocrine gland that is a precursor to the HLA system. This gland is transgenerational obesogenic and highly sensitive to ambient iodine and fetal microbiota. An epigenetic polymorphism of this desiodase is at the origin of the embryonic HLA system and contributes to polymetallic syndrome X, which manifests itself in the form of atherogenic cardiovascular risk factors.
