Diese Drüse ist transgenerational obesogen und sehr empfindlich gegenüber Jod in der Umgebung und der fetalen Mikrobiota. Ein epigenetischer Polymorphismus dieser Deiodase ist der Ursprung des embryonalen HLA-Systems und trägt zum polymetallischen X-Syndrom bei, das sich in Form von atherogenen kardiovaskulären Risikofaktoren äußert.
