'Äther (aUt~Q wahrscheinlich von cd’{}w, ich brenne) - ist eme materielle Substanz feinster Art, feiner als alle sichtbaren Stoffe, von der man annimmt, daß sie alle die scheinbar leeren Räume erfüllt.' So fängt der Artikel 'Äther' an, den J am es CIer k Maxwell für die 9. Auflage der Encyclopaedia Britannica geschrieben hat. Der Ursprung des Wortes scheint auf eine Ideenverbindung mit dem Begriffe 'Feuer' hinzuweisen, da die anderen drei 'EIe· mente' Erde, Wasser und Luft den festen, flüssigen und gas­ förmigen Zustand der gewöhnlichen Materie darstellen. Der Name Äther deutet eine viel feinere, durchdringendere, übermaterielle Substanz an. Ne wto n benutzt das Wort als Bezeichnung für ein Medium, welches den ganzen Raum erfüllt, nicht nur den scheinbar leeren, sondern auch den scheinbar besetzten Raum; denn der Lichtäther muß zweifellos auch zwischen den Atomen eines durchsichtigen Körpers vorhanden sein, muß sozusagen seine Poren ausfüllen, denn sonst könnte ja das Licht nicht hindurchdringen. Der folgende Auszug aus Newton s Schriften zeigt, was für Vermutungen er über dieses Medium gehabt hat.
