Wraz z intensyfikacją działalności człowieka mającej na celu zaspokojenie bieżących potrzeb powstają ogromne ilości odpadów, które nie są odpowiednio utylizowane. W Brazylii przemysł rolniczy jest jednym z sektorów odpowiedzialnych za wytwarzanie produktów ubocznych o potencjalnym działaniu zanieczyszczającym, które często są wyrzucane do środowiska bez żadnego rodzaju przetwarzania. Jednak odpady rolnicze, takie jak łupiny kawy, łupiny ryżu, wytłoki z trzciny cukrowej i inne, są uważane za surowce odnawialne ze względu na swój skład lignocelulozowy. W związku z tym przeprowadzono różne bioprocesy w celu uzyskania cząsteczek o wartości dodanej z tej biomasy. W niniejszej książce podjęto próbę maksymalizacji warunków uzyskiwania fenoli całkowitych poprzez hydrolizę alkaliczną (delignifikację) łupin kawy, produktu ubocznego przemysłu kawowego.
