La malaria è una delle malattie protozoarie più devastanti, che causa elevati tassi di morbilità e mortalità nell’uomo. Antichi studi ayurvedici indicano che le piante medicinali venivano utilizzate per il trattamento della malaria. Grazie ai progressi tecnologici, gli approcci di progettazione dei farmaci utilizzano abitualmente composti naturali per lo sviluppo di farmaci antimalarici. Pertanto, è necessario integrare le informazioni relative alle piante medicinali dotate di proprietà antimalariche, al fine di sensibilizzare i chimici medicinali e, più in generale, l’intera comunità biologica sull’importanza di queste piante medicinali. Tenendo presente questo obiettivo, abbiamo sviluppato una banca dati denominata 'AMPDB - Antimalarial Plants Database', che fornisce informazioni fitochimiche sulle piante medicinali antimalariche diffuse nel subcontinente indiano. Abbiamo inoltre incluso i fitocomponenti attivi / sostanze fitochimiche che fungono essenzialmente da entità chimiche funzionali per futuri esperimenti di progettazione di farmaci.
