A malária é uma das doenças protozoárias mais devastadoras, causando elevadas taxas de morbilidade e mortalidade humanas. Estudos ayurvédicos antigos indicam que as plantas medicinais eram utilizadas no tratamento da malária. Devido aos avanços tecnológicos, as abordagens de conceção de fármacos utilizam habitualmente compostos naturais para o desenvolvimento de medicamentos antimaláricos. Assim, a informação sobre as plantas medicinais com propriedades antimaláricas deve ser integrada, de modo a sensibilizar os químicos medicinais e, de um modo geral, toda a comunidade biológica para a importância destas plantas medicinais. Tendo isto em conta, desenvolvemos uma base de dados denominada AMPDB - Base de Dados de Plantas Antimaláricas, que fornece informação fitoquímica sobre plantas medicinais antimaláricas distribuídas no subcontinente indiano. Incluímos também os fitocomponentes ativos / fitoquímicos que desempenham essencialmente o papel de entidades químicas funcionais para futuras experiências de conceção de fármacos.
