In seiner Weltchronik gewinnen wir über den „Kampf zweier entgegengesetzter Prinzipien' hinaus Einblicke in eine Welt des Denkens, die sowohl von einer heilsgeschichtlichen Determination der Zeitläufte als auch der vermittelnden Position eines Geistlichen in der Frage nach geistlicher wie weltlicher Macht und deren Strategien und theologischen Rechtfertigungen zum Machterhalt zeugen.Das Selbstverständnis des Kaisertums kulminiert bei Otto von Freising um die Auslegung des Gleichnisses der vier Weltreiche im Buch David, der Zweischwerter/Gewalten-Lehre und der Translationstheorie. Ersteres und letztere sind auf das Ende der Welt gerichtet, um am Jüngsten Tag ihrer endgültigen Bestimmung gerecht werden.
