Indonesien ist bekannt als das Land mit dem größten Tropenwald der Welt mit einer Fläche von 111,5 Millionen Hektar (ha). Der größte Wald befindet sich in Papua mit 38,2 Mio. ha. Es folgen Kalimantan mit 36,5 Millionen ha, Sumatra mit 22,8 Millionen ha, Sulawesi mit 11 Millionen ha und Java mit 3 Millionen ha. Die indigenen Völker haben einen großen Anteil an der Erhaltung der Wälder des Landes. Denn 57 Millionen Hektar oder 51,1 Prozent der Wälder werden von indigenen Völkern bewirtschaftet. Tatsächlich sind 40 Millionen Hektar davon sehr gut erhalten. Für diesen Beitrag erreichte die Kohlenstoffspeicherung im Boden in 785 indigenen Gebieten Indonesiens im Jahr 2019 3,99 Milliarden Tonnen pro ha. Die Werte für stehenden und durchwurzelbaren Kohlenstoff betrugen 1,18 Milliarden bzw. 0,368 Milliarden Tonnen pro ha. Indigene Völker gehen auch verantwortungsbewusst mit der Natur im Einklang mit ihren Gewohnheitswerten um. So fällen sie beispielsweise keine Bäume achtlos, um die Wälder zu erhalten und Naturkatastrophen zu verhindern.
