A cura interna já era utilizada na época romana. Por exemplo, o famoso edifício do Panteão foi construído, em parte, com betão curado internamente. A cura externa do betão, como a nebulização da superfície, atinge apenas a superfície do betão, enquanto que com a cura interna toda a microestrutura tridimensional do betão pode ser curada. O objetivo desta tese foi estudar o impacto da cura interna na resistência à compressão, resistência à tração/flexão e retração por secagem. O objetivo era também determinar quais os tamanhos de grão dos agregados leves que seriam os melhores para a cura interna. Nesta tese, a cura interna é feita com agregados leves. Os resultados dos testes obtidos mostraram que os melhores tamanhos de grão dos agregados leves para a cura interna são 0-2 mm e 2-4 mm. A utilização destes tamanhos permitiu produzir betão com propriedades mecânicas semelhantes às do betão normal, mas com uma redução significativa da retração por secagem.
