In this book, we present the economic, political and social landscape of the municipality of Guarapuava, located in the state of Paraná, and analyse, within this context, how the issues of employment and education feature in the lives of former prisoners from the municipality’s prison system who are supported by the Municipal Patronage Programme. This programme has been operating in the city for thirty-three years, since 1981, overseeing the enforcement of sentences for those released from the prison system, with the aim of social reintegration. We understand that each individual’s life story is a synthesis of society in their life and, at the same time, each life story is a reflection mediated by society itself. From this perspective, this study seeks to understand how the material conditions experienced by these individuals contributed to the commission of the offence; analysing their employment and educational history are key factors in helping us to understand the full range of experiences these people have undergone.
